Hi, I’m Matt. I’m a schoolboy living in England, and I absolutely ADORE Robot Wars. I first remember watching this show when I was very little, sitting down on a Friday and watching Robot Wars. I only really Series 3, and because it is the only series I clearly remember, I became fond of the format and the robots in it. I remember as a kid being creeped out by Backstabber and being very happy when Razer pitted it.
I owned the video of the First World Championship for many years, and I watched it very frequently. I went to the Grand Final of Series 7, and I remember that we got Noel Sharkey to sign our foam finger, but we didn’t have a permanent marker, so he just went over his signature over and over again in ballpoint pen! What I mostly remember about my time in the audience was Typhoon 2 breaking the arena wall, looked to me very deliberate, and the booing as Storm 2 was denied the title it deserved. I really felt sorry for Craig Charles having to go through that final interview, the crowd were booing, the Storm 2 team felt cheated, the Typhoon team were the only ones who felt they deserved to win. It was not a pleasant bow-out for the UK wars.
I have a large collection of (largely broken) Robot Wars merchandise, in particular the minibots and minibot arena, which I couldn’t bring myself to give away or throw away. Sure Razer’s srimech is missing, Chaos 2’s flipper won’t stay down, nearly all of the paint on Killalot’s lance is nearly all gone and the less said about Bash’s flamethrower the better, but I won’t throw them out full stop. I also own a copy of Robot Wars: Arenas of Destruction and Extreme Destruction which I play on from time to time, but I think there isn’t enough Competitor Robots to fight, so the game becomes too easy quickly. I think my proudest achievement was managing to flip Killalot out of the arena with Behemoth.
I do owe plenty to the legend behind BBCRobotwarsUK, on who’s channel I am now watching every episode of Robot Wars he has uploaded.
