The Jailer was a robot which entered Series 3 of Robot Wars. Despite successfully qualifying for that series, it was forced to withdraw after its speed controller blew hours before filming began. It is unknown which robot replaced The Jailer for filming.

The Jailer was later rebuilt for Series 4, but it is unknown if the team finished the robot in time for it to qualify.

Design[]

The Jailer was a robot built out of a scrapped supermarket trolley. Its weapon was a flywheel-driven spiked axe powered by an over-volted car starter motor.

Qualification[]

The Jailer completed its obstacle course in order to qualify for Series 3.

"All met back at Tony's place at 7.45 and loaded the Jailer and every other bit of hardware into the back of my car just in case the robot broke down and needed some last minute repairs and not forgetting all the paperwork which none of us had filled in yet and then we got going, we arrived in plenty of time and so we booked in and proceeded to the weigh-in station (81.5kg), now this was a little worrying as we did not have any armour on it yet and we were 1.5 kilos over. We then went to Derek Foxwells table for a technical check and he gave us the all clear and also told us what we could do to lose a bit of weight, next was the fun bit "Testing Time" they didn't want us to test our weapon which was a little disappointing but what we had to do is knock the football into the goal, drive over the see-saw, drive round some breeze blocks (I misheard him and thought he said knock them down, so I did, whoops!), drive in a figure 8 around some big springs and then drive onto an inch high piece of wood and spin on the spot. I did all of this flawlessly which was a bit of a miracle considering this was the first time I had ever driven the robot (I did not tell them this). We then loaded everything back into my car and then hung around for about an hour and watched other people testing their robots and whilst we were there we were quite pleased as no-one else managed to do as well as us which boosted our confidence a bit!"
— Ben Musson's account of the audition[1]

It was only after this successful qualification that The Jailer was forced to withdraw because of the blown speed controller, following some adjustments made to it on the morning of filming. Despite the team's best efforts, the controller could not be fixed after an hour of attempted repairs.

"Well this is where the story sort of comes to an end as I have not had time to fill diary in, so to cut a long story short, the robot was finished in time for the filming day but on the morning of the filming I was doing some final adjustments to the speed controller when suddenly everything stopped, I then tried for about an hour to get the controller working until we had to leave, I then continued to try and failed to get some life back into the speed controller, so that is a warning to anyone else using a wheelchair speed controller, ensure you either know exactly how your speed controller works so you can fix it if it breaks or TAKE A SPARE. Needless to say we could not compete due to the failure but it was a very good day and we learnt loads of tips from looking at everybody elses robot and talking to them so it wasn't a total waste of time and we will definitely be back next year."
— Ben Musson on why The Jailer withdrew from Series 3[2]

The team intended to return for Series 4, but it is unknown if they attended the qualifiers.

"Phoned Robot Wars and as usual all the dates have changed!  The provisional dates (probably will change!) for the auditions are now from 24th July to the 12th August and the filming is from 14th August to the 1st September (Probably because Phillipa is pregnant!). They also mentioned the format of the competition has changed, now it looks like everybody will be going through heats to get to the filming, so if we are good enough will get in, and lets face it there were quite a few crappy Robots in last years heats that really should not have been there!"
— Ben Musson expressing interest in attending the Series 4 qualifiers[3]
