"Revving up in the Pits are another eight new robots, all hoping to become Robot Wars: The British Champion. But only one can go through to the second of our Series Semi-Finals next time. In short, it's make or break time. And when I say break, I mean break each other!"
Craig Charles' introduction

Heat L of Robot Wars: The Fifth Wars (also referred to in recaps as Heat 12) was the twelfth and final heat which determined the Semi-Finalists of Robot Wars: The Fifth Wars. The episode featuring Heat L was originally broadcast on 21 May 2002 on BBC Choice and repeated on 4 October 2002 on BBC Two.

Eliminators[]

"Battling then for the last available place in our series semi-finals. Previous grand finalists Pussycat against The Executioner. Terrorhurtz, new name for a veteran team against Ming 3 in their third wars. Clawed Hopper is interesting. Twister could whip up a frenzy. 101 are back again and Fluffy, they're new [to the UK Championship]."
— Jonathan Pearce reviewing the robots in the heat and how they line-up in the first round

Pussycat (2) vs The Executioner[]

"Pussycat, the second seeds for these Robot Wars. That is a measure of the task ahead for The Executioner."
— Jonathan Pearce at the start of the battle
ExecutionerPussycat

The Executioner grapples with Pussycat

The Executioner charged straight at Pussycat, but Pussycat drove forwards to dodge it. The two competitors turned around to face each other, and charged at one another, and The Executioner got its claw around Pussycat's blade, which stopped it from spinning. As The Executioner held Pussycat, the two struggled together, and The Executioner briefly got an advantage and tried to push Pussycat onto the flame pit. However, Pussycat kept pulling against The Executioner, which was forced to let it go.

"...The Executioner has Pussycat in its grip at the moment. Mark Nenadic, driving The Executioner, with its hydraulic crushing blade, powered by American motors. Pussycat can't get away, until that moment."
— Jonathan Pearce as The Executioner holds Pussycat
Pussycat vs executioner

Pussycat uses its blade to push The Executioner

Pussycat drove across the arena, and The Executioner drove to the bottom of the arena, then the two turned to face each other. Pussycat charged at The Executioner, but as it got close, The Executioner rammed Pussycat, deflecting it away as it pushed past. The Executioner drove up the arena, driving over the flame pit, and Pussycat chased after it. However, as it drove over the flame pit, its caster briefly became caught on the flame pit, preventing it from driving off. Pussycat had to reverse a little to lift the caster free, then drove off the flame pit. The Executioner fled as Pussycat drove at it, but drove into the arena wall. Pussycat drove into the rear of The Executioner, hitting it with its cutting blade, but The Executioner reversed against it and drove away across the arena.

"Spins its circular blade, coming forward, trying to create damage on The Executioner. On the flames, moving away, up to 14 miles an hour top speeds, slightly the quicker of the two. The lighter of the two. On the trail of The Executioner now."
— Jonathan Pearce as Pussycat chases The Executioner
Pussycat vs executioner 2

Pussycat rams into the side of The Executioner

Pussycat chased after it, and when The Executioner stopped for a moment, it drove into The Executioner's side. The Executioner tried to get away, but drove into the side wall by Dead Metal's CPZ, and Pussycat drove into The Executioner, pushing it into the CPZ. Pussycat drove away to the arena centre, and The Executioner managed to get free from the CPZ. The two competitors charged at each other, and on impact, Pussycat rode up The Executioner's front, and slid off as The Executioner pushed past. The Executioner drove by the floor flipper, and as Pussycat drove at it, The Executioner span on the spot. It hit Pussycat, but suddenly stopped moving. Pussycat cut into the side with its cutting disc, turning The Executioner around, then drove away for another attack. It charged into The Executioner's side, and The Executioner started moving again. The Executioner drove away, but as Pussycat chased it, it drove into an angle grinder. Pussycat rammed into its side a couple of times, and The Executioner turned away from the angle grinder, but in doing so turned to the edge of Matilda's CPZ, who hit it with her flywheel a couple of times, ripping off the tip of The Executioner's crusher.

"Off comes the tip of the hydraulic crusher! The Executioner; Mark and Ian Sanford and young David, who's a 9-year old schoolboy, in major peril now! Look, the potency of the weapon is gone. The pit button has been depressed by Pussycat, and The Executioner's team feeling mighty depressed at the moment!"
— Jonathan Pearce after Matilda rips off The Executioner's crusher
ExecutionerPussycat2

Pussycat passes the death sentence onto the weaponless Executioner

Pussycat drove down to the bottom of the arena to open the pit. The Executioner was still mobile, but with little control, as it span around on the spot. Pussycat drove back up the arena, driving behind The Executioner, and pushed it away from the wall. Pussycat reversed away from its limping opponent, then slammed into it, and this immobilised The Executioner. Pussycat pushed against The Executioner's side, turning it around, then pushed against its back, tipping it into the Pit of Oblivion.

"Do you know, I thought we might've had a shock here at the start of this eliminator battle. Don't forget, the winner of this heat takes our final semi-final position in the series. And Pussycat still have hopes. The Executioner does not. They've been axed"
— Jonathan Pearce as Pussycat pits The Executioner

Winner: Pussycat

Terrorhurtz vs Ming 3[]

MingTerrorhurtz

Terrorhurtz slams down on Ming 3

Terrorhurtz had the quicker start, driving around Ming 3, dodging its initial charge. Both competitors turned around, but Terrorhurtz was faster again, driving past Ming 3. As Ming 3 got close, Terrorhurtz span on the spot, hitting Ming 3's side with its axe. Terrorhurtz turned around as Ming 3 tried to get in with its crusher, and got at Ming 3's side then hit the crusher with its axe.

"They were represented by Killerhurtz before. Not greatly successful; they needed more potency, and they've got it with that axe - slamming down on Ming 3."
— Jonathan Pearce as Terrorhurtz starts strong
MingTerrorhurtz2

Ming 3 pinches its opponent

Ming 3 tried to drive around Terrorhurtz, but before it could get away, Terrorhurtz got beside it again and axed it. Ming 3 turned away, and Terrorhurtz turned and drove away to the arena centre. Ming 3 drove after it, but Terrorhurtz dodged it as it got close, swerving around Ming 3. Ming 3 turned around to try and line up an attack with its crusher, but Terrorhurtz turned to avoid it as it drove in, getting beside Ming 3 and firing its axe. Ming 3 tried turning, but this allowed Terrorhurtz to land multiple axe blows on its crusher, until Ming 3 turned away. Terrorhurtz drove after it, getting besides it and landing another axe blow on the crusher. Ming 3 tried turning away, but Terrorhurtz drove at its side, missing an axe blow as it did so. Ming 3 drove around Terrorhurtz, which chased after it, and as Ming 3 turned around, Terrorhurtz got at its side and axed the crusher again. Ming 3 drove up the arena, and Terrorhurtz chased after it.

"We haven't really seen the Ming 3 beak in action yet, have we?"
— Jonathan Pearce as Ming 3 escapes up the arena

Terrorhurtz got behind Ming 3, but its CO2 supply for its axe had run out, so it could not attack. Ming 3 drove away and turned around, then drove at Terrorhurtz's side, but couldn't get under its side skirts, and Terrorhurtz turned away. Ming 3 drove past, and the two competitors turned around and drove at each other. Ming 3 got under Terrorhurtz, and grabbed it with its crusher, then slowly dragged Terrorhurtz to a flame jet.

"Now they close down on Terrorhurtz! Well, they waited their moment then, Ming 3. Good driving by Andrew Cotterell."
— Jonathan Pearce as Ming 3 grabs Terrorhurtz

Ming 3's crumpled rear end after the interference from Matilda

However, as it drove over the flame jet, Matilda suddenly came out of her CPZ, reversing into the back of Ming 3 with rear flywheel, ripping open the back. This attack immobilised Ming 3, and it was left stuck on the flame jet, with Terrorhurtz stuck on its front wedge. Refbot came in to try and push them apart, and Dead Metal pushed Terrorhurtz free of Ming 3.

"Matilda's gone in on the attack! That is way out of order, and Matilda's hit Ming 3 from behind, when he was nowhere near the CPZ!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Matilda knocks out Ming 3
PushingThzandMing3apart

Refbot tries to push Terrorhurtz and Ming 3 apart

Dead Metal got his arms around the axe head, pulling Terrorhurtz back and preventing it from getting away. Dead Metal let Terrorhurtz go, and it drove into the centre of the arena, but Ming 3 was immobile. In the last few seconds, Matilda backed into Ming 3 again, causing more damage to the back and ripping out some of the internals.

"Naughty Matilda, naughty Matilda!"
— Craig Charles after the battle

The judges' decision was based on the battle up until the House Robot intervention, and they ruled in favour of Terrorhurtz.

"Well, before I tell you the Judges' decision, I can only apologise for Matilda's behaviour. She's been given a red card, and sternly told off! But based on the battling performance before Matilda's intervention, the Judges' have gone for the amazing robot Terrorhurtz!"
— Craig Charles informing the Cotterells of Matilda's "punishment"

Winner: Terrorhurtz

Clawed Hopper vs Twister[]

Twisterfront

Twister breaks down while trying to attack Clawed Hopper

DeadMetalTwister

Dead Metal seizes Twister

As the battle started, Clawed Hopper shuffled forwards, and Twister was much quicker, driving across the arena and around Clawed Hopper. Twister got at Clawed Hopper's side and tried to use its drill, but did no damage.

"Look at Twister, chasing off after Clawed Hopper, not knowing quite what to do with it"
— Jonathan Pearce

Twister drove away for another attack, driving to the side of the arena. As Twister charged at Clawed Hopper, Clawed Hopper span on the spot, and it hit Twister front-on as it charged in. Twister reversed, but suddenly stopped.

"Er, Twister? You're not exactly whipping up a storm. And I think they're gonna be counted out here by the Refbot. Are we to see a walker going through to reward all the ingenuity? We are! Twister counted out!"
— Jonathan Pearce willing the walkerbot to win
Clawd Hopper Twister

Clawed Hopper slowly seals Twister's fate

HopperTwisterPit

Twister eventually goes down

Clawed Hopper slowly pushed the immobile Twister up the arena, and Refbot counted it out of the Fifth Wars. Dead Metal came out to attack, grabbing hold of Twister and slicing into it with his saw. He pushed it onto the flame pit, whilst Clawed Hopper walked to the bottom of the arena and opened the pit. to slice through its armour and leave it on the flame pit. Dead Metal pushed Twister into Matilda's flywheel, but suddenly he broke down as well. Matilda had to push Twister out of Dead Metal's arms and push Dead Metal away from Twister. Matilda nudged Twister towards the pit, then backed away to allow Clawed Hopper to finish the job and push Twister down into the pit, which it did very slowly, pushing Twister to the edge of the pit, then turning and walking around to its front so it could line itself up.

"By the time Halley's Comet next passes the earth, they'll be in the pit."
— Jonathan Pearce as Clawed Hopper pushes Twister to the pit

Eventually, Clawed Hopper backed Twister into the pit and cease was called.

Winner: Clawed Hopper

101 (23) vs Fluffy[]

101Track

The track falls from 101

Fluffy vs 101

Fluffy continues to hit 101

101 charged at Fluffy, but the newcomers swerved to avoid it, getting the spinning axe up to speed. 101 hit its side, but Fluffy turned away. Fluffy drove away to the middle of the arena, and 101 drove after it, but Fluffy turned around, hitting the front of 101. This blow hit one of 101's tracks, breaking it. 101 turned away, and turned back to face Fluffy, but Fluffy landed another landed another blow on the front, which left the broken track hanging loose off the side. 101 couldn't drive forward because of the broken track hanging off, so it span around, then reversed, leaving behind the broken track.

"That has certainly, has rendered 101, almost, almost immobile"
— Jonathan Pearce
101Fluffy

Fluffy tears into 101

Fluffy chased after 101 as it drove up the arena, hitting the side. 101 turned to face Fluffy, but couldn't drive forwards, and Fluffy struck the front again. 101 backed up by the top arena wall, and Fluffy hit 101 again, but its spinning axe had slowed almost to a stop, so it turned away. As it did so, 101 turned at it, trying to hit it with its spike, but then turned into the wall.

"Mike Franklin looks on and sees the destruction caused to his machine 101, and can't believe it! The time is nigh for a machine which cost a pound and a penny, to put together as they used to say, hence the name, 101."
— Jonathan Pearce reading the last rites to the former semi-finalist

Fluffy drove to the arena centre, got its spinning axe back up to speed, then drove back up the arena to the stricken 101, hitting the front. 101 resisted this blow, but all it could do is turn back and forth by the arena wall. Fluffy turned away and drove away to the arena centre again, then drove back at 101 as it reversed into the top arena wall. Fluffy hit one of the side flanges, buckling it, then drove away as 101 tried turning at it. 101 turned away from the wall, but Fluffy hit the side with the broken track, then drove away for another attack. Fluffy drove at 101's other side, and the spinning axe stopped, so Fluffy tried pushing 101. Time ran out, leaving the judges with an easy decision to make.

"They {101} are just alive so technically it will have to a Judges' decision, but I think you and I know which it's going to go, don't we? Very impressive Fluffy!"
— Jonathan Pearce as 101 struggles to drive in the last few seconds

Winner: Fluffy

Pussycat (2) vs Clawed Hopper[]

Philippa Forrester: "This is the first time a walker has got through to round two, and that's your robot. How do you feel?"
Team Clawed Hopper: "Very pleased, we thought we'd be trashed in the first round to be honest"
Philippa Forrester: "And here you are, then tragically, you're pitted against seed number two, grand finalist from last year, the Pussycat. What does that do?"
Team Clawed Hopper: "I think our run might come to an abrupt end...however, we will give it our best shot"

Pussycat rips off Clawed Hopper's drum

As Clawed Hopper walked forwards, Pussycat quickly drove around to the back of Clawed Hopper. The blade stopped on impact, so Pussycat pushed Clawed Hopper around so it was facing the other way, then drove away to get its blade up to speed. Pussycat drove around Clawed Hopper, but as it drove at its opponent, Clawed Hopper turned to face it, and walked into it as Pussycat charged in, so Pussycat reversed. It drove around Clawed Hopper, then charged at the front again, but Clawed Hopper pushed against Pussycat, so it turned and drove down the arena, then drove at the side of Clawed Hopper, hitting its spinning drum, severing the chain, leaving it hanging loose.

"Oh, what's come off there? Part of the chain drive for Clawed Hopper, under repeated Pussycat blade attacks, and certainly it's come loose! The side rotating flail, part of the weaponry, and again Pussycat by far the more aggressive!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Pussycat rips one of Clawed Hopper's drums loose
Pussycat vs clawed hopper

Clawed Hopper tries to attack Pussycat

With Clawed Hopper too slow to get away, Pussycat repeatedly slammed into the side, grinding against it with its disc, ripping off the drum. Pussycat continued to slam into Clawed Hopper as it shuffled along, but couldn't do any major damage, and as it drove into Clawed Hopper's front, it rolled itself over. Pussycat reversed, but this tipped it upright, so its disc was facing upwards as it drove into Clawed Hopper, and Clawed Hopper got one of its claws hooked behind Pussycat's wheels. Pussycat reversed, then drove around Clawed Hopper, driving into its drum, which tipped it back down, and it drove down the arena as time ran out.

"That was a war of attrition, and definitely one for the judges."
— Craig Charles' appraisal

Winner: Pussycat

Terrorhurtz vs Fluffy[]

Terrorhurtz Fluffydevice

Terrorhurtz with its "Fluffy launch device"

Philippa Forrester: "And they call Anne Robinson a battleaxe? No, this is the battle of the axes! Is it a cruel accident of fate that you've been put together? And then I couldn't think of any more after that, but you said you've got the most powerful axe in the business, but it's going to be put to the test"
John Reid: "Probably, this is a serious test, this one. However we have a Fluffy-launch device on the back"
Philippa Forrester: "A Fluffy-launch device? That wasn't there before?"
John Reid: "It's a secret weapon"
Philippa Forrester: "How does it work?"
John Reid: "The theory is, it hits this, rides up the back, and it does horrible things when it gets launched into the air"
Philippa Forrester: "Yes...not very scientific, is it?"
John Reid: "We'll see"
Philippa Forrester: "But it's very last minute, so fair enough"

— The pre-match introduction of the "Fluffy-launch device", from Team Hurtz

Terrorhurtz axes Fluffy

As soon as the activate command was sounded, Terrorhurtz drove at Fluffy, and got underneath it with its wedged sides, rather than the pole, nicknamed the "Fluffy-launch device". Terrorhurtz slammed the top of Fluffy three times, but Fluffy got its spinning axes up to speed, which helped it slide off the front of Terrorhurtz and escape up the arena.

"Terrorhurtz, the faster, coming straight on the attack, almost as if the tactics of John Reid and Dominic Parkinson to get this over and done with!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Terrorhurtz gets under and axes Fluffy early on

Terrorhurtz is ripped open

Terrorhurtz chased after Fluffy and tried to axe it again, but missed. Fluffy turned around and quickly drove past Terrorhurtz, driving to the arena centre. Terrorhurtz chased after it, and soon caught up, and fired the axe, but Fluffy turned to avoid it. Fluffy dodged around in front of Terrorhurtz, turning one way, then the other, and Terrorhurtz missed with the axe again. Fluffy drove to the other side of the arena, and as Terrorhurtz drove after it, Fluffy turned to face it. As the two competitors came together, Terrorhurtz hit Fluffy with the axe, and Fluffy hit the side of Terrorhurtz with its spinning axe, ripping off the side armour.

"Oh, what about that for an attack! Well it's Terrorhurtz that has the side ripped off it! As it came in on the attack on Fluffy, there the Fluffy blade ripped away the side armour of Terrorhurtz!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy rips off Terrorhurtz's side

This the wheel exposed, caused CO2 to leak from the axe mechanism, and immobilised Terrorhurtz on one side. As Terrorhurtz turned back and forth, unable to move forwards, Fluffy drove away, then turned around for another attack. Fluffy slammed into Terrorhurtz's side, ripping out some internals, leaving it immobilised. Fluffy drove away again, turned around, then pushed Terrorhurtz onto the flame pit. Refbot counted Terrorhurtz out, with Fluffy slamming into Terrorhurtz a couple of times as he did so. The second time, Fluffy bounced off the front of Terrorhurtz and hit Refbot, who backed away.

"I am so impressed by Fluffy, their first time in [the UK Championship of] Robot Wars, and Terrorhurtz are discombobulated! Something has been ripped away from the inside, and they're facing, here, oblivion, from that very strong Fluffy team."
— Jonathan Pearce

Shunt pits Terrorhurtz before going in as well

The House Robots came out to attack, with Shunt axing Terrorhurtz and lifting it with his scoop. Sir Killalot grabbed Terrorhurtz with his claw and picked it up, then carried it up the arena to the floor flipper. Terrorhurtz was thrown across the arena, landing upside-down, and the House Robots continued to attack. Shunt axed the under-belly and lifted the robot up with his scoop, which left Terrorhurtz caught on the edge of the axe. Shunt pushed Terrorhurtz to the pit, but Terrorhurtz was still caught on the axe. Shunt tried to drop it in, but drove forwards and toppled into the pit as he did so.

"Terrorhurtz knows it really hurts! Fluffy does its stuff, Fluffy goes through!"

Fluffy causes Pussycat's blade to fly off

The two competitors charged at each other in the opening seconds, with Fluffy hitting the underside of Pussycat with its spinning axe, but bouncing off. Pussycat turned around to attack Fluffy, but Fluffy drove away. Pussycat chased Fluffy, but Fluffy turned and drove away down the arena. Pussycat chased after it, slamming into the side, but the blade bounce off Fluffy on impact. Pussycat pushed against Fluffy's side, getting underneath and lifting Fluffy's wheels off the floor, but then dropped it. Fluffy drove away up the arena, and the two competitors turned to face each other, then charged together. Fluffy landed a glancing blow on Pussycat, then turned around and hit the front of Pussycat, ripping off the spinning disc and one of the caster wheels with one attack.

"That was no tickling! The Pussycat blade is gone!"
— Jonathan Pearce

Fluffy is counted out

The impact left Pussycat upright, but it managed to get itself down. It chased after Fluffy, but without its disc could only ram into Fluffy. Fluffy's spinning blade slowed to a stop, and Pussycat drove around to try and push, but in doing so, drove onto a flame vent.

"It was blade against blade, and Pussycat were no match!"

Dead Metal pushes Fluffy into the pit

Pussycat tried to push Fluffy, but couldn't get any traction, and had to drive away to get off the flame vent. As it got away, it became evident that the battle had turned on its head, since Fluffy had broken down. Fluffy was counted out by Refbot, allowing Pussycat to qualify for the series semi-finals. The House Robots came out to attack, with Dead Metal cutting into the top of Fluffy, and Sir Killalot picking it up with his claw. Sir Killalot carried Fluffy to the floor flipper, and after it was thrown, Dead Metal pushed it to the pit and pushed it in. However, as he did so, he drove over the edge and got stuck over the pit.

"How unlucky can you get? Pussycat use up all of their nine lives, and go through to the series semi-finals!"

Trivia[]

  • This Heat was the only one in history to feature two previous year's seeds where the top and bottom seeds were in opposite halves between series; in Series 5, Pussycat was now the seed within the upper half and 101 was now in the lower half, a reversal of Series 4.
  • The concluding Heat of the Fifth Wars saw Clawed Hopper become the first walkerbot ever to pass Round 1 of the UK Championship, after beating Twister.
  • Fluffy, the winner of Series 5's Most Promising Newcomer Award, upon defeating the twenty-third seed 101 made 101 the first seed ever to lose in the first round on a judges' decision.
    • It was one of only three newcomers to reach the third round of the heats in this war.
  • Both of the newcomers had been seen in Robot Wars Extreme prior to Heat L, making Heat L the only heat in the Fifth Wars where all eight teams had featured in the televised show before.
  • Heat L saw Terrorhurtz compete in televised competition for the first time, having appeared in the video games Robot Wars: Arenas of Destruction and Robot Wars: Advanced Destruction prior to this episode being shown.
  • This was the last heat in UK Robot Wars history where the competing teams had, between them, debuted in every war up to and including the current series.
  • The third Eliminator was the only battle in this Heat not to feature a seeded robot or team that lost in the first round of a UK Championship.
  • Heat B of Series 7 would be the next Heat in which a seeded robot did not make it to the second round.
