"Those menacing teeth and eyes will surely strike fear into the heart of any roboteer"
Robot Wars: The Official Magazine on Aggrobot

Aggrobot was the name given to a series of four heavyweight robots which competed in Robot Wars. It fought in Series 3, 4, 6 and 7, also entering in the first series of Robot Wars Extreme, and always brandished the same blue colour scheme and angry face. Aggrobot was most famous for its upset victory against a malfunctioning Razer in Series 3, in which it also reached the Heat Final.

Versions of Aggrobot[]

"...basically every Aggrobot has been completely different"
— Bob Leach, in Series 7, on the Aggrobot series

Aggrobot (Series 3)[]

"Ooohh, plenty of boot in the Aggro from a spring fired thirty inch spike. It cost fifteen hundred pounds to build, took four weeks [to build], has twin motors, and a trio of brothers at the controls."
Jonathan Pearce introduces Aggrobot
Aggrobot 3 arena

Aggrobot as it looked in Series 3

The original Aggrobot was a very large pyramid-shaped robot, armed with a spring-powered thirty inch spike on the rear and a wedge front, with a "tongue" at the end to help get underneath opponents. The robot was built over four weeks at a cost of £1,500. It was described by Australian journalist Nick Whigham as "a werewolf rat".[1]. It had tall, sloping sides which made it difficult to grab, but also had a high ground clearance.

The original Aggrobot made the Heat Final of Series 3, shocking many by defeating heat favourites Razer in the second round. However, it was eventually defeated by Blade in the Heat Final, where it found itself on the receiving end of Dead Metal's saw.

Aggrobot 2 (Series 4)[]

"...the product of nine months hard work since the end of the last wars!"
— Peter Leach describes Aggrobot 2

Aggrobot 2

Aggrobot 2 in the arena

Aggrobot 2 entered Series 4, as the 20th seed. It was an invertible, four-wheel driven robot built over nine months, and made from steel and aluminium alloy from a skip. Its weapons were a lifting wedge on the front that could lift either way up and was painted with a face similar to that of the original Aggrobot, and a hydraulic spike at the rear that the team referred to as a zonker. It was based on the mechanics of a Crossbow, and it was shown to be capable of creating 20mm bullet holes in mild steel. The robot was powered by 2 electric wheelchair motors, which gave a top speed of just 6 mph. The wheels were custom-built[2]

Aggrobot 3 (Extreme, Series 6)[]

"A stealth-shaped pointed wedge, with lifting arms and cutters, similar to Sir Killalot. Works both ways up, lightweight laminated armour that Shunt won't penetrate. Agile, but subject to driver error they tell me!"
— Jonathan Pearce describes Aggrobot 3 in Series 6
Extreme Aggrobot

Aggrobot 3 in the arena in Extreme 1

Aggrobot s6 arena

Aggrobot 3 in the arena in Series 6

Aggrobot 3 was a smaller pointed wedge ("stealth shaped, with lurid logos" as Jonathan Pearce put it) with a lifting mechanism that pried Aggrobot's wedge off the ground, in turn lifting its opponent. This technique was seen against Splinter in its Extreme 1 Mayhem, but was unreliable and caused the robot to be eliminated after it jammed open. It also featured a very powerful crushing mechanism similar to the "Jaws of Life" used by Sir Killalot, capable of cutting an aluminium signpost clean in half. The jaws were capable of changing from horizontal to vertical.

Aggrobot S6

Aggrobot 3 in Series 6

It was very agile, being powered by 2 12 volt electric motors, giving a top speed of 10 mph[3], 4mph faster that the previous version. It was also clad in lightweight laminated armour, but was knocked out in the second round of Series 6 by a blow from Vader.

Aggrobot (Series 7)[]

Jayne Middlemiss: "What modifications have you made to this particular Aggrobot?"
Bob Leach: "Everything! We've got parts from the last Aggrobot, but basically every Aggrobot has been completely different This one is just more powerful, we hope harder, and a lot more fierce."
— In the pre-first round interview
Aggrobot S7

Aggrobot in Series 7

The robot was simply renamed Aggrobot in Series 7; this new model was basically a tougher and more compact version of the previous Aggrobot 3 model, being made using some parts from the previous version, including the 2 500 Watt motors. It was armed with a pincer that produced 17 tonnes of pressure. The pincer was, however, never seen in action, as it could not gain any purchase on its opponents in its only battle. Nevertheless, Aggrobot's high tensile armour was extremely resilient, shrugging off and breaking the weaponry of Zorro upon their collision.

The Team[]

Aggrobot was entered by the Surrey-based team of brothers, Peter, Bob and Jon Leach. They mostly used the name Team Aggrobot, but in Series 3, they were known as The Aggrobots. In later appearances, the team started to wear sleeveless shirts and bandannas to match the 'tough guy' image of their robot, also featuring the robot's eyes on their shirts. In Series 7, the team dressed up as punks, with leather jackets and studded collars. Jon Leach was absent for the recording of Series 7, though he was still listed on the statistics board.

Qualification[]

Aggrobot successfully entered Series 3 through attending the auditions, with Aggrobot 2 automatically qualifying for Series 4 by virtue of its seeding. However, the team did bring their redesigned machine to the Robot Mayhem live event as a static display alongside other seeded machines.

"Aggrobot team were day {sic}, saw their really amazing top armour plate which no-one knows what it is made of"
— Will Jeat on the Robot Wars Forum[4]

Following its appearances in early Extreme 1 events, Aggrobot 3 attended two legs of the 2001 Live Event tour in a bid to qualify for Series 5. At the London Arena leg, it initially won in dominant fashion against newcomer Full Metal Bucket, ramming and lifting it to win the audience vote. Facing Reactor 2 in the early afternoon 'final', Aggrobot 3 struggled as it was repeatedly flipped by the former, then being 'grappled' by Razer, which was participating as a 'guest' House Robot. Eventually, the then-incumbent World Champions earned vengeance by pitting Aggrobot 3, cementing a win and successful qualification attempt by Reactor 2.[5] Aggrobot 3 made a further appearance at the Wembley Arena leg, where it fought Barber-Ous in a one-on-one qualifier. However, after suffering serious damage inflicted by its opponent's full-body drum, Aggrobot 3 lost the battle, and failed to qualify for the series following each of its attempts.

"The Qualifiers were a long time ago! There was a robot, I think called Agrobot {sic}? They had just fitted a new titanium shell and before the match were convinced it was indestructible - we tried to be gentle with it - but tore a big gash in the side! One of the chaps looked like he was going to burst in to tears! I spent the next year feeling guilty about it!"
— Simon Rafferty of Team Rotraktor[6]
MadDogS6

Aggrobot (far side) at the Series 6 qualifiers

Aggrobot 3 would later attempt to qualify for Series 6 by fighting a four-way melee alongside Hydra, Mad Dog and an as-yet unknown competitor. Although the winner of the qualifier remains unknown, it is known that Aggrobot 3 went on to qualify for the series along with Hydra.

Aggrobot fought Ceros, Rhino and the Dutch entry Twister in its Series 7 qualifier battle. During the fight, Aggrobot was thrown into the air by Ceros, and upon its landing, Aggrobot was immobilised. Twister went on to win the battle, but despite this, all three of the other robots, including Aggrobot, were awarded discretionary places in the main competition of the Seventh Wars.

"We fought for around 2 minutes in which time Ceros managed to get flipped, self right perfectly and then go on to toss Aggrobot several feet in the air and on contact with terra firma again were dead to the world!"
— Ceros website describes their battle with Aggrobot (edited)[7]

Robot History[]

Series 3[]

"We hope to make holes in all the other robots, it's built for destruction! That's what we're here for, to destroy the other robots!"
— Peter Leach in the team's introduction

Aggrobot was originally scheduled to fight fellow newcomer Daisy in the first round of its first Robot Wars appearance, but due to Daisy breaking down before the fight and pulling out of the competition, Aggrobot's first round battle now saw it go up against the substitute robot, another newcomer, Binky.

Aggrobot vs binky

Aggrobot spears Binky as Sgt. Bash looks on

At the start, Binky moved slowly towards Aggrobot, which turned one way, then the other. As Binky got close, Aggrobot turned and drove past Binky, driving over the edge of Binky's wedge. Binky reversed away, and Aggrobot turned around, then slowly drove towards Binky. Binky drove forwards, but missed Aggrobot and accidentally turned into the wall. Binky had driven onto the arena spike, which lifted it up, and Aggrobot reversed towards it to use its rear spike cannon. It tried to line it up to attack, but turned incorrectly and missed. Aggrobot drove forwards, then slammed into Binky in reverse. The spike was still out, so it pierced the armour of Binky, and Aggrobot pushed it against the wall. Aggrobot drove away and turned around, then drove at the side of Binky, nudging it back onto the spikes. Aggrobot turned around and tried to use its rear spike, but as it reversed into Binky, the spike cannon slide against Binky's round shape, so the spike wasn't able to get at the right position.

"Again, trying to manoeuvre that spike to come forward, but for me, Aggrobot looks unsteady, and looks a little bit cumbersome."
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot struggles to line up its rear spike cannon
Aggrobot Matilda shell

Aggrobot knocks Matilda's shell off

Aggrobot tried to reverse Binky into Sergeant Bash's CPZ, but both competitors were lifted up by the arena spikes. After the spikes lowered, Aggrobot drove forwards, then reversed at Binky, trying to use its spike cannon, but as it pushed against Binky, the spike cannon slid against the side, so the spike missed when it was fired. Aggrobot drove forwards, and Sergeant Bash pushed Binky forwards, against Aggrobot's spike. Aggrobot drove into the arena centre, and it became clear that Binky was immobile. Matilda and Sir Killalot came over to attack Binky along with Sergeant Bash. Aggrobot held back as Sir Killalot picked Binky up with his lance, then drove at Binky, but Matilda blocked it, so Aggrobot turned and drove away from the House Robots. Suddenly, Aggrobot rammed into the back of Matilda, knocking her shell off.

"...and now the Cricket fans trying to bowl a maiden over! Look! They've ripped the shell off Matilda! They've body popped Matilda! She's nude! Oh, horrible! That's a nightmare that'll stay in my memory forever! Naked Matilda! Shocking!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot knocks the shell off of Matilda

Matilda drove around and rammed past Aggrobot. Aggrobot drove forwards, and tried to reversed into Matilda's shell, but Matilda got to the shell first and knocked it aside. Cease was called and Aggrobot was put through to the next round of the Heat.

Philippa Forrester: "Don't forget, we're only on Round 1!"
Peter Leach: "Yes I know, but you know, to get through, it's ... yeah. It's what we're here for!"
Jonathan Pearce: "But there's nothing as deadly as a woman scorned! Matilda will be back Aggrobot!"
— Philippa Forrester and Jonathan Pearce warn the Aggrobot team against celebrating too much

Aggrobot then went up against Heat favourite Razer in the Heat Semi-Final.

"Do you know what they said about us? ... They said the Pit's warmed up, ready for us! Can you believe that?"
— Simon Scott on the Aggrobot team
Razer Aggrobot 1

The first contact between the pair

The two robots drove towards the centre of the arena, and Aggrobot turned, allowing Razer to drive at Aggrobot's side, getting under it and pushing it back. However, due to the tall, steep, sloping sides of Aggrobot, Razer could not get a grip on it.

"...trying to get that crushing claw, cross between a claw and a beak, to get some purchase on Aggrobot. I wonder if the shape of Aggrobot will prevent that."
— Jonathan Pearce as Razer tries to crush Razer
Razer Aggrobot 2

Razer continues to hunt down Aggrobot

Aggrobot turned away off of Razer's ramp, and reversed in with the spike cannon, but the spike cannon was at the wrong angle, and Razer turned and pushed back at Aggrobot. Razer opened the crusher, but due to the tall steep back of Aggrobot, Razer could not see a place to grab, so it reversed away. Aggrobot turned to face Razer, but Razer drove behind Aggrobot and slammed it into an arena wall. It tried to crush Aggrobot, this time finding a weak spot - the gap where the spike cannon was. Razer crushed this spot, causing a large hole to form at the back of Aggrobot.

"And there, purchase gained, in on the side wall of the arena there, by Razer,. You can hear a crumpling noise there, but is the damage sustained just superficial? I don't think so! No, you can see gashes there!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Razer crushes into the back of Aggrobot
Razer Aggrobot 3

Aggrobot tries to bring its spike weapon into play

Razer let go and backed off, and Aggrobot escaped and turned to face Razer head on. The two robots kept trying to get into a good position to use their weapons, Aggrobot turned back and forth to try and get under Razer, but couldn't get under the ground clearance.

"We thought earlier on, it might be a bit of a cumbersome robot, but showing good control, and bashing back in on Razer there."
— Jonathan Pearce
Razer Aggrobot Series 3 crush

Razer crushes the back end of Aggrobot

Razer tried to get under the front of Aggrobot, but Aggrobot turned away. Aggrobot reversed at Razer, trying to use its spike cannon, but couldn't get it at the right angle, and Razer pushed, so Aggrobot drove away and turned around as Razer drove after it. As it turned, Razer was right behind it, so it turned itself right onto Razer's wedge, but Aggrobot turned off the wedge quickly. Aggrobot turned around, trying to get the front tongue under Razer, but couldn't get under Razer's low ground clearance. Aggrobot reversed and spun as Razer drove after it, and Razer got under the front. However, Razer barely closed the crusher as the team knew they couldn't grab the front due to the sloping sides. This allowed Aggrobot to reverse and turn to use the spike cannon, reversing at Razer, getting the spike cannon right under the crusher, but Razer turned before it could fire. Razer got under the side, and tried to crush into Aggrobot's side, but the crusher merely scratched along the side, unable to puncture.

"Scratching down on the surface of Aggrobot, but again, only superficial damage really."
— Jonathan Pearce as Razer tries to crush through the side of Aggrobot
Aggrobots3aftermath

Damage to the back end of Aggrobot from Razer

Razer pushed Aggrobot across the arena, into the wall, and tried to crush into the side again, but the crusher merely scratched the side again. Razer tried to get into a better position, which allowed Aggrobot to turn away from the wall. Aggrobot reversed and turned around, but exposed its rear to Razer, and Razer rammed into it, getting behind it, and crushing into the back. Again, Razer targeted just beside the spike cannon, and crushed a huge hole in the back of Aggrobot, ripping the back armour open.

"But look at this! It's found a weak spot on Aggrobot! Crumpling, tearing, rending, ripping, shredding! Is Aggrobot immobilised there? No, comes spinning away, there is life in Aggrobot yet!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Razer crush down through Aggrobot's rear
Aggrobot Razer House Robots

Aggrobot is axed by Shunt while Razer also sustains damage

Razer reversed, and Aggrobot reversed away from the wall, and Razer got under the side. Razer tried to crush into the side, but couldn't pierce Aggrobot's sloping side. The two robots spun around together, but suddenly Razer's crushing arm opened fully, and the rear spike lifted Razer's wheels off the ground. The Razer team couldn't get the beak to lower, and Razer was therefore rendered immobile, leaving Aggrobot as an unlikely winner. Aggrobot drove into the back of Razer, giving it a push, but as it pushed past Razer it drove into Shunt, who axed Aggrobot repeatedly, puncturing the top. Dead Metal came in, and cut into Razer's wings, whilst Sir Killalot rammed it from behind.

"Oh yes, this is what Robot Wars is all about! ... The sparks fly, the blades come hacking in, this is what we dream about!"
— Jonathan Pearce as the House Robots attack Aggrobot and Razer

Cease was called, Razer was surprisingly eliminated, and Aggrobot was put through to the Heat Final.

Craig Charles: "He was one of the favourites, he was my favourite, I thought he was going to go on and win this!"
Bob Leach: "So did we!"
Peter Leach: "No we did not!"
Craig Charles: "So you've taken out the favourite, do you think you've replaced him there then?"
Bob Leach: "Yes, definitely!"
— Post-battle interview

Here, it went up against fellow newcomer Blade, and looked as dark horses to win after defeating Razer. Before the battle, the Aggrobot team shook hands with their opponents, and claimed "We couldn't be fighting a nicer bunch of guys".

"The Aggrobots! We work all day, and we work all night. We've come here to fight, and fight we will!"
— Poetry from Peter Leach before the battle
Aggrobot Blade Shunt axe

Aggrobot pushes Blade back to Shunt

The two robots drove straight at each other, but after ramming onto Aggrobot's wedge, Blade reversed. Aggrobot turned, and Blade rammed into its side. Aggrobot turned with spike cannon fired, but this allowed Blade to get behind and push. Aggrobot turned, but Blade kept pushing, edging Aggrobot towards Shunt's CPZ. Aggrobot turned, and Blade reversed, and as Blade drove back at Aggrobot, Aggrobot spun, trying to get the tongue underneath, but Blade reversed. Aggrobot drove around Blade, and Blade turned around, then drove into the front of Aggrobot.

"Aggrobot, with the tongue lashing in the front, and the spike in the rear. Looks like some great tank out there, with the nasty eyes, and the grusome teeth."
— Jonathan Pearce
Blade vs aggrobot

Blade wipes the smile off Aggrobot's face

After initially struggling to get traction, Blade pushed Aggrobot around, forcing it towards Shunt's CPZ. Aggrobot turned, and Blade pushed it to the arena spikes. Aggrobot managed to push Blade in reverse to Shunt, who axed Blade, but Blade's armour withstood the blow. Blade pushed Aggrobot across the arena and into the arena wall, slamming into it a couple of times, whilst Aggrobot could not get away, as its tongue was caught under the wall. Blade gave it a push on the side, allowing Aggrobot to get free, and Aggrobot turned away from the wall. However, Blade rammed into it again, and suddenly Aggrobot ground to a halt, rolling towards the arena centre and stopping.

"Well, no lying in their cots for the Aggrobots, out they come very, very slowly. And I do think Aggrobot is in trouble!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot stops moving
Aggrobot Dead Metal sparks

Dead Metal slices Aggrobot, causing sparks to fly

Blade drove around and rammed into the side, ramming it onto the flame pit.

"Well, the Blade boys lived on kebabs while they were making this robot, and at the moment it's Aggro Shish! It's being cooked there on the spit!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot is pushed onto the flame pit
Aggrobot Blade flipper

The beaten Aggrobot is thrown by the Floor Flipper

With Aggrobot immobilised, Dead Metal came out of his CPZ, grabbed Aggrobot and cut into its side. Sir Killalot got behind it, spearing the back with his lance and pushing it into the arena wall, getting the lance just by the spike cannon and lifting Aggrobot up. Sir Killalot pushed it into Dead Metal's saw, who cut into the front wedge of Aggrobot, sending showers of sparks flying. Sir Killalot carried Aggrobot up to the Floor Flipper, and Aggrobot was thrown, bouncing back onto its wheels. Cease was then called and Aggrobot was eliminated from the competition.

"And then Dead Metal took the opportunity to wipe the smile off Aggrobot's face."
— Jonathan Pearce in the Series 3 recap, shown in the Grand Final

Series 4[]

"What's this capable of, in the last wars? Defeating highly fancied Razer in astonishing style!"
— Jonathan Pearce reviews Aggrobot's Series 3 performance

Aggrobot 2 was seeded number twenty for the Fourth Wars, in recognition of its heat final appearance and defeat of Razer. In the penultimate Heat of the series, Aggrobot 2 was drawn up against the experienced Oblivion 2 and newcomer Saw Point in the first round melee.

"This is what we're here for! To do damage, serious damage to other robots! Nothing else but!"
— Bob Leach, showing a piece of metal that Aggrobot 2's zonker had punctured

Aggrobot vs saw point

Aggrobot 2 attempts to stab Saw Point

At the begining of the battle, Oblivion 2 charged straight into Saw Point, and Aggrobot 2 drove into Oblivion 2. Unable to get under Oblivion 2 with its front lifter, Aggrobot 2 reversed, then rammed into the side of Saw Point, tipping the robot onto its side. Oblivion 2 had stopped moving after its initial charge on Saw Point. Saw Point was stuck on its side because of its side spike. It rolled along, but could not get back upright. Aggrobot 2 reversed into it, and as it drove away, Saw Point managed to turn back upright. As the House Robots closed in on the immobile Oblivion 2, Aggrobot 2 drove into it, but before it could line up an attack, Saw Point drove into Aggrobot 2's side with its ram, so Aggrobot drove away. After turning around, Aggrobot 2 reversed into Oblivion 2, puncturing the side with its rear hydraulic spike. Aggrobot 2 pulled the spike out, then chased after Saw Point, pushing it towards Dead Metal. Saw Point managed to quickly get away, driving into Aggrobot 2, but Aggrobot 2 drove past. As it did so, it drove into Sir Killalot as he drove over to Oblivion 2. Aggrobot 2 quickly reversed away, and rammed into Saw Point. The two robots backed off each other, then slammed into each other in reverse.

"This is Aggrobot, under pressure from Saw Point..."
— Jonathan Pearce

Aggrobot 2 drove into the centre of the arena, and Saw Point charged at it with its spike. Saw Point punctured Aggrobot 2 and rammed it into the bottom corner. Aggrobot 2 managed to push Saw Point back. Meanwhile, Oblivion was spun around by Sir Killalot, cut into by Dead Metal, then pitted. Aggrobot 2 proceeded through to the next round along with Saw Point.

"This is Aggrobot, little nudge of the head, they know they're safe."
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot 2 lifts its head up and down whilst Oblivion 2 is pitted

Next, the seeded Aggrobot 2 machine went up against S.M.I.D.S.Y. in the second round of the Heat.

Julia Reed: "This is going to be an interesting one, because you're very evenly matched, aren't you?"
Peter Leach: "I think so, yeah. We look to be the same sort of robot; same sort of size, work both ways up, we'll see!"
Bob Leach: "We're a nicer colour!"
— In the pre-battle interview
SMIDSY vs Aggrobot

Aggrobot 2 lifts S.M.I.D.S.Y.

Aggrobot 2 is Burned

Aggrobot 2's wheels catch fire

At the start, S.M.I.D.S.Y. drove around to the side of Aggrobot 2, then turned around the front. Aggrobot 2 reversed, and S.M.I.D.S.Y. drove back around to the side of Aggrobot 2 and pushed. Aggrobot 2 tried to turn away, but S.M.I.D.S.Y. kept pushing. However, S.M.I.D.S.Y. turned too close to one of the arena flame jets, giving Aggrobot 2 a chance to get away. S.M.I.D.S.Y.'s top caught fire, and Aggrobot 2 reversed into it, but S.M.I.D.S.Y. was still driving properly and pushed past Aggrobot 2, then turned around, getting behind Aggrobot 2 and pushing it up the arena. However, S.M.I.D.S.Y. turned at the wrong moment, allowing Aggrobot to turn away, and Aggrobot 2 reversed. S.M.I.D.S.Y. got back as Aggrobot 2's side, and though Aggrobot 2 reversed, S.M.I.D.S.Y. got behind it and pushed. Aggrobot 2 got away, and as S.M.I.D.S.Y. drove at it, it drove onto Aggrobot 2's lifter. Aggrobot 2 raised the lifter, but S.M.I.D.S.Y. fell off as Aggrobot 2 tried to push.

"...trying to get in underneath S.M.I.D.S.Y., that'll be difficult, it's got a 1 inch adjustable ground clearance, S.M.I.D.S.Y."

Aggrobot Mounts S.M.I.D.S

Aggrobot 2 mounts S.M.I.D.S.Y.

S.M.I.D.S.Y. drove up the arena and turned around, ramming Aggrobot, then pushing it up the arena, into one of the flame jets at the top arena wall. Smoke began to rise from Aggrobot 2, and it slowly moved away from the wall, and Aggrobot slammed into it. Aggrobot 2 seemed to stop by the arena wall, and S.M.I.D.S.Y. charged at it, getting underneath, and ramming Aggrobot 2 in reverse across the arena, dropping it off by the flame pit.

"...slamming in underneath Aggrobot, Aggrobot the little piggy-back, coming down onto the arena floor over the flame pit in the end, so that's good style and control and aggression from S.M.I.D.S.Y."
— Jonathan Pearce as S.M.I.D.S.Y. rams Aggrobot 2 across the arena

Aggrobot 2 was immobile by Sgt. Bash's CPZ, who blasted it with his flamethrower. S.M.I.D.S.Y. pushed Aggrobot 2 into Sgt. Bash's pincer, and Sgt. Bash pushed it away. As Aggrobot 2 rolled away, S.M.I.D.S.Y. rammed it up the arena, to the flame jet at the top arena wall. Aggrobot 2's wheels and top caught fire, and Sgt. Bash rushed up the arena, crumpling the side with his pincer as he pulled it down to the floor flipper. Sir Killalot came over, crushing into the back, ripping through the armour as if it was paper. Aggrobot 2 was put on the floor flipper, but Dead Metal reversed into it and pushed it off before the flipper could fire. Sir Killalot grabbed it with his claw, lifted it up, and spun it around. Cease was called and Aggrobot 2 was eliminated from the competition.

"Well, Aggrobot is an agro burger!"
— Craig Charles

Extreme 1[]

"...the jaws at the rear, and flipper at the front give it plenty of weaponry, plenty of Aggro!"
— Jonathan Pearce describing Aggrobot 3

In the first series of Extreme, Aggrobot 3 only fought in a Mayhem qualifier battle where it went up against Killertron and Splinter for the right to qualify for the first Annihilator of the series.

"Sharing a bench is bad enough with them, in the arena they've got no chance!"
— Bob Leach on his opponents
Killertron vs splinter vs aggrobot

Aggrobot 3 is attacked by Splinter and Killertron

Aggrobot 3 started by driving between its two opponents, before turning around. It drove past Splinter, bumping into one of its arms as it did so. Splinter turned around and got Aggrobot 3 on its scoop, hitting it with its axe, but failed to puncture. Aggrobot 3 tried to get away, but Splinter kept after it, firing its axe and using the axe and one of its arms to hold Aggrobot 3 still. However, Killertron axed the back of Splinter, and Splinter reversed, allowing Aggrobot 3 to get away. Aggrobot 3 spun on the spot as Killertron approached, then stopped and got under Killertron's front scoop. Killertron turned off of Aggrobot 3's front, and Splinter drove at the two of them, but as it did so, it drove straight onto Aggrobot 3's lifter. Aggrobot 3 lifted Splinter up on its side, whilst Killertron axed Aggrobot 3, but the axe could not puncture.

"This is Aggrobot, levering away at Splinter! Taking a little bit of punishment, one in the eye from the Killertron axe, I think there Aggrobot!"
— Jonathan Pearce
Killertron Aggrobot Splinter 2

Aggrobot 3 manages to lift Splinter

Aggrobot 3 dropped Splinter, and both robots reversed. Aggrobot 3 raised its lifter slightly, and rammed into the side of Killertron. Aggrobot 3 could not gain an advantage on it, and Killertron turned against Aggrobot 3, but suddenly Splinter charged at Killertron, pushing it away from Aggrobot 3 and axing it. Killertron turned away from Splinter's front, and drove at Aggrobot 3, but Aggrobot 3 drove away. Killertron reversed at Splinter, which started pushing Killertron, but one of its arms snagged on Aggrobot 3, which was driving beside them, so Splinter turned after Aggrobot 3, missing an axe blow. Aggrobot 3 turned around, and reversed at Killertron, jaw wide open and lifter slightly raised. As it reversed, the jaw ripped up the floor a little. Before Aggrobot 3 could get close to Killertron, Splinter drove at its side and axed it, failing to puncture the armour again. Aggrobot 3 got under the side of Splinter, lifting it up and turning the whole robot over.

"A great attack there by Peter Leach and his brothers! Look at this, the nudge was enough, and Splinter went over!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot 3 lifts Splinter over
Aggrobot Splinter

Aggrobot 3 topples Splinter

Killertron was behind it, and managed to puncture the armour. Killertron landed another two axe blows, but these ones did not puncture. Aggrobot 3's lifter had become stuck in the raised position, pinning the robot in place, and pinning Splinter under the lifter. Dead Metal came over and cut into Splinter, but then Refbot drove between Aggrobot 3 and Splinter, pushing Splinter out from under Aggrobot 3, due to the rules (a robot pinned down does not count as immobilised). Dead Metal pushed Splinter against Aggrobot 3, turning it off its back, but it was still propped against Aggrobot 3's lifter, unable to move as Dead Metal held it. Refbot drove between the two, allowing Splinter to fall back on its wheels. Dead Metal cut into Aggrobot 3, and Refbot began to count it out.

"They were in no danger at all, Aggrobot, and now they're five seconds away from elimination! That's the end of Aggrobot! Well for me, they were well in command of this Mayhem, but they're out, they've gone, Aggrobot!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Refbot counts Aggrobot 3 out
Aggrobot 3 Refbot

Aggrobot 3 malfunctions and is counted out

With Aggrobot 3 counted out, Sir Killalot grabbed Aggrobot 3, taking it to the flame pit, and after holding it over the flames, taking it to the floor flipper. As Sir Killalot let Aggrobot 3 go, it started moving again and tried to reverse off the flipper, but couldn't get off in time, and was thrown, crashing into Splinter. Despite being able to move, Aggrobot 3 was eliminated, and soon after, Killertron stopped moving, and Sir Killalot lifted it up and dropped it into the pit, leaving Splinter as the winner. Sir Killalot chased after Aggrobot 3, which managed to avoid the claw, then cease was called.

Infernal Contraption drove at 259's flywheel, which flipped it up a little. 259 drove after Infernal Contraption, which turned away as Aggrobot 3 drove at it from the other side, so 259 hit the front of Aggrobot 3 instead, flipping it up a little and doing a little superficial damage. Aggrobot 3 held back as 259 went after Infinity, but 259 then pushed Infernal Contraption in reversed into Aggrobot 3, causing Infernal Contraption's back armour to fall off. 259 went back after Infinity, and Aggrobot 3 turned around, and drove after Infernal Contraption. Infernal Contraption tried to hit the side of Aggrobot 3, but merely rode up the side. Aggrobot 3 pushed against Infernal Contraption, but Infernal Contraption turned and reversed away.

"Also doing good work out there is Aggrobot 3. Very experienced, once beat Razer I seem to remember, in Robot Wars 3, Aggrobot."
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot 3 pushes against Infernal Contraption
259 vs Infernal Contraption vs Aggrobot 3

Aggrobot 3 avoids danger from Infernal Contraption and 259

Meanwhile, Infinity hit the pit release button and drove into the pit as it opened, having had its pincers buckled by 259. Aggrobot 3 drove between 259 and Infernal Contraption, and as 259 hit Infernal Contraption, Aggrobot 3 blocked Infernal Contraption from getting away, allowing 259 to shred the tyres of Infernal Contraption. Aggrobot 3 drove away up the arena, and 259 continued to hit Infernal Contraption, pushing it against the arena wall. Aggrobot 3 briefly charged in, driving at 259, but turned away without making an attack. As 259 drove away from Infernal Contraption, Aggrobot 3 drove back down the arena, turned around, and tried to grab onto Infernal Contraption with its jaws, which were in the horizontal position. However, Aggrobot 3 could not get a grip on Infernal Contraption, partly due to its shape, but also because Infernal Contraption kept spinning around. Aggrobot 3 accidentally reversed into the pit release button as it reversed after Infernal Contraption, and 259 came back down the arena. 259 hit Infernal Contraption a couple of times with the flywheel, flipping it over Aggrobot 3. Aggrobot 3 kept back as 259 continued to batter Infernal Contraption, and Infernal Contraption tried to drive into the pit. Although it couldn't fit in because Infinity was in there, it got one wheel stuck, and as it was unable to move away, Refbot counted it out. Cease was called, and Aggrobot 3 qualified to go through to the next round of the heat along with 259.

Aggrobot 3 then had to face another spinning disc machine in the second round of the heat, in the form of newcomer Vader.

Philippa Forrester: "Newcomers, but actually proved their worth, I think"
Peter Leach: "Yes, I think too."
Philippa Forrester: "Do you think you can get 'em?"
Peter Leach: "Yes"
Philippa Forrester: "Where it hurts?"
Peter Leach: "Yes, most certainly!"
Philippa Forrester: "Good, 'nuff said!"

Vader vs Aggrobot

Vader hits Aggrobot 3

Both robots held back at the start, with Vader getting its flywheel up to speed, and Aggrobot 3 turning around, then turning back again. With its disc up to speed, Vader drove across the arena, but Aggrobot 3 moved away before Vader could hit it.

"Terrific battle here, Aggrobot 3 with all the experience, but Vader with that great spinning blade..."
— Jonathan Pearce in the opening moments of the battle

Aggrobot 3 turned and drove past Vader, driving to the top of the arena, then reversed straight at Vader's front with its jaws open. However, this proved to be a fatal error, as Vader hit it on the back corner, flipping the robot up on it side, leaving it immobile.

"...and Has that slam-bam, no thank you ma'am, hurt Aggrobot 3?"
— Jonathan Pearce after Vader's initial attack

Vader reversed, then drove at the side of Aggrobot 3, knocking it towards the CPZ. Vader slammed into it again, pushing it to the edge of Dead Metal's CPZ. Dead Metal tried to cut into the top of Aggrobot 3, but Aggrobot 3 was too low to be cut by the saw. Vader drove at the back of Aggrobot 3, hitting the jaw a couple of times, buckling one half up. Dead Metal got at the side of Aggrobot 3 and cut into it with his saw, whilst Refbot came over and started counting it out.

"...and here, Aggrobot 3 are out of Robot Wars: The Sixth Wars! That is a surprise! Vader look good for me, Aggrobot 3, hammered early on in this battle!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot 3 is counted out

Dead Metal pushed it down the arena as Matilda opened the pit. Matilda pushed Aggrobot 3 to the edge of the pit, and Dead Metal gave it the final push, eliminating it.

Craig Charles: "What went wrong?"
Peter Leach: "I wish we knew, I wish we knew!"
Craig Charles: "I mean, you're one of the only robots ever to beat our reigning World and UK champion, you beat Razer, at one stage! So you're certainly a decent robot!"
Bob Leach: "Well, in your own words "We don't know yet the cause, but these sort of things happen, in Robot Wars!"
— Post-battle interview

After the battle, the Aggrobot 3 team mentioned to Craig Charles, and Philippa Forrester, that the first hit from the disc had dislodged something inside, immobilising the whole robot, though they were uncertain what came loose.

"...it's been totally reliable up to this point. Through the qualifiers, and through the first round heats, we did well."
— Peter Leach to Craig Charles

Series 7[]

"Fighting in a fourth wars, has never won a heat though."
— Jonathan Pearce as Aggrobot enters the arena

For its first round battle of the Seventh Wars, Aggrobot fought in the final first round melee of the series, where it was placed up against Team Ming's new robot Zorro, Reptirron The Second and Team Roaming Robots' new robot Ripper.

At the very beginning of the battle, Aggrobot was chased after by Reptirron The Second, but managed to keep its distance, but then it drove close to Zorro, hitting the side hard, causing a decoration to fly off. Reptirron The Second took advantage of this distraction, getting under Aggrobot and flipping it over as it pushed it into Mr. Psycho. Aggrobot managed to escape the colossal House Robot, and as Ripper flipped Zorro over, drove in between Ripper and Reptirron The Second. It drove at the front of Reptirron The Second, but got away before it could flip, but Ripper got behind it and flipped it, causing it to roll over.

"Big Ripper flips Aggrobot, this is tremendous stuff! This is one of the best battles of the series so far..."

This did not affect Aggrobot, as it was invertible. Reptirron The Second was close, and Aggrobot tried to drive away, but as it drove over the floor flipper, the tip of the robot became stuck in the floor. Aggrobot reversed, turning against Reptirron The Second, trying to use its rear cutter, but it couldn't get any purchase on Reptirron The Second. Ripper drove at it and tried to flip, but fired too early, missing. Reptirron The Second pushed Aggrobot around, and although Aggrobot got away, it drove straight into the path of Ripper, who tossed it across the arena. Aggrobot paused, then turned, and Ripper rushed over and flipped it over again. As Zorro was counted out, Reptirron The Second rammed Aggrobot and flipped it over. Aggrobot turned around as Reptirron The Second reversed for another attack, and when Reptirron The Second drove at Aggrobot, it drove up Aggrobot's wedge. Aggrobot managed to lift Reptirron The Second a little, but Aggrobot could not push Reptirron The Second and let it go. Reptirron The Second chased after Aggrobot, until Reptirron The Second drove into the side of Ripper, giving Aggrobot a chance to escape. Aggrobot accidentally drove into the arena wall, and reversed straight into Reptirron The Second. Aggrobot drove around Reptirron The Second and drove up the arena. Aggrobot drove across the arena, bumping into Zorro, which had been accidentally as Mr. Psycho placed it on the Drop Zone. Aggrobot drove to the bottom of the arena, driving between Reptirron The Second and Ripper. Ripper drove after Aggrobot, getting its flipper underneath, but Aggrobot got away before it could flip. Aggrobot drove to the side of the arena, but Reptirron The Second caught up with it and flipped it over. In the last few seconds, Aggrobot drove straight at Ripper, and managed to get underneath and pushed it into a CPZ.

"I think they've [Ripper] done enough anyway to go through. It's between Reptirron and Aggrobot for me, the second place."
— Jonathan Pearce as the battle draws to a close

The battle went to a judges' decision between the remaining three competitors. Aggrobot was unsurprisingly eliminated from the competition as a result of the judges' decision, as the robot had dealt little to no damage or aggression at all during the battle.

Trivia[]

Aggrobot S7

Official photo in Series 7

  • Despite fighting in four main competitions and being seeded itself, Aggrobot never fought another seeded machine. The closest it came was when it fought Splinter in its Extreme 1 Mayhem, who was seeded seventeenth in the concurrently filmed Fifth Wars. It did fight Spawn of Scutter, the tenth seed in the Fourth Wars in a Fantasy Fight in the original Robot Wars Magazine.
  • Four out of Aggrobot's five one-on-one battles were against a robot with five letters in its name: Binky, Razer, Blade and Vader. The only exception was the six-letter S.M.I.D.S.Y. in Series 4.
    • Aggrobot's intended first opponent in Series 3, Daisy, also had five letters in its name.
  • Aggrobot was profiled in Robot Wars: The Ultimate Guide.
  • Both times Aggrobot was in the same episode as Razer, it was thrown by the floor flipper in its defeat.
  • In Extreme 1, Jonathan Pearce described Aggrobot 3 as "reliable" whilst summarising it, despite the fact reliability was listed as its weakness
  • All but one of Aggrobot's appearances were in episodes that contained a quick immobilisation, with one being inflicted on Aggrobot itself.
  • Throughout the series that it appeared in, Aggrobot never shared the arena with Growler or Cassius Chrome.
  • In Series 7, Jon Leach's name was misspelt as "Joy Leach" on the statistics board.
  • In 2016, when BBC news reported the return of Robot Wars, the Series 3 version of Aggrobot was included amongst pictures of classic competitors[8]. Aggrobot was incorrectly referred to as "The Aggrobot".
  • In 2016, Australian news outlet "news.com.au" (owned by NewsCorp Australia) profiled the return of Robot Wars. Along with several UK champions, Aggrobot (along with Max Damage and the Series 3 versions of Diotoir) was singled out as one of Robot Wars' memorable and colourful designs.[9]
  • All of the robots that beat Aggrobot from series 4-7 would then go on to lose to the eventual heat winner.
  • Splinter and Ripper are the only robots to beat Aggrobot and not then lose their next battles.
